1890: Dr. Herman Hollerith, an employee of the United States Census Bureau builds a tabulator that counts pre-punched cards. The system operates nearly three times as quickly as the previous method, saving $5 million.
Later, a company will be formed to market his invention - which will become known as International Business Machines (IBM).
